The basic pension, commonly known as the Rürup pension after the economist Bert Rürup, is a form of pension provision funded by the state since 2005.

The contributions to a Rürup pension are deductible as special expenses within the statutory maximum amounts and under the following conditions:

  • The insurance contract may only provide for the payment of a monthly life annuity.
  • The pension may not start before the age of 60 if the contract is concluded before 1 January 2012 and not before the age of 62 if the contract is concluded after 31 December 2011.
  • The claims arising from the insurance contract cannot be inherited, cannot be lent as collateral, cannot be sold and cannot be capitalised (sect. 10, para. 1, no. 2b of the Income Tax Act (EStG)).
